SIGNIFICANCE
The Twenty-Fourth Amendment prohibits the government to enforce poll taxes, allowing a wider variety of people to have the ability to vote.
What Helped move the government to take action?Since slavery was abolished the black community had been fighting for equality. Many people were still very opinionated about the rights given to blacks. Not a lot of white Americans wanted to give equal treatment. So the black Americans began a civil rights movement. They began peaceful protests, such as sit-ins, bus boycotts, rallies, assemblies, and marches. Even though they were causing no harm many black's suffered tragedies, and many lost their lives. Although there were many racist people, there was also many black activists. For example, the Underground Railroad. Many white people opened their homes and gave direction. As people began to realize what was being done to the black people, they began to unite and eventually the government granted what was wanted.
